The Role of Polysemioticity in the Effectiveness of Teaching Aspects of Mathematics: A Pilot Study Report

Weronika Szewczyk

Abstract

Based on theories such as those of Daniel Ginsberg and Zenon Dyrszlag, this article examines the potential of polysemiotic teaching to improve the effectiveness of mathematics education and conceptual understanding, using basic concepts from metric space theory as an example. In a pilot study (N = 11), more polysemiotic methods (experimental group; n = 4) were compared with less polysemiotic methods (control group; n = 7). The experimental group achieved higher scores on the tests, suggesting that more polysemiotic teaching may enhance abstract conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills, offering strategies for improving the effectiveness of mathematics education.
