Race, Disease, and Social Disorders – When Difference Stigmatizes: A Comparative Reading of “Saint Monsieur Baly” by Williams Sassine and “I Am Someone” by Aminata Aidara

Abstract


Narrative-verbal fiction, in its development, often mobilizes resources borrowed from reality. From then on, it naturally bears the mark of the clichés, prejudices, and stereotypes of its world. Beyond that, it allows, thanks to the distribution of characters, to analyze the logic of construction and transmission of received ideas about races or diseases, but above all, questions the relationships between a standardized group and another type of group. The aim of analyzing two works from different geographical spaces was to show that modalities of marginalization can differ from one context to another, but they mobilize the same classificatory resources. The study revealed, above all, the incoherence of the discourses on which they are based.
