Physical Activity of Pregnant women in the Light of Ancient Texts

Anna Tatarkiewicz

Abstract

This article analyses the importance of physical activity for pregnant women from a historical perspective. Ancient authors such as Aristotle, Plutarch and Soranus of Ephesus emphasised the benefits of moderate physical exercise for the well-being of the mother and a successful pregnancy, while warning against excessive exertion. Their observations, based on intuition and limited empirical evidence, are consistent with the results of contemporary research. Contemporary research confirms that regular, appropriately adapted physical activity reduces the risk of pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes and hypertension, and also facilitates childbirth and a faster return to full activity after delivery. The convergence of ancient recommendations with modern medical guidelines demonstrates the enduring value of physical activity as an important component of a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy.
