The Collapse of the Syrian Assad Regime and the Reconfiguration of the Rivalry Between Israel and Iran
Abstract
After fourteen years of the civil war, the quick fall of Assad’s regime has marked the beginning of a new phase in the Middle East. Israel and Iran are two of the countries that have been aff ected the most in the region. Fall of the regime has ended centralized authority and has fragmented Syria into a mosaic of competing actors as well. Assad’s removal has expanded Israel’s sphere of infl uence across the northern theater and opened new avenues for regional strategic maneuvering. Likewise, Israel has gained greater operational freedom to shape events along its borders and disrupt adversarial entrenchment, whereas it has reduced the coherence of the Iran–Hezbollah–Syria axis that once posed a unifi ed challenge to Israel. In this context, the article aims to answer the research question of how has the collapse of the Syrian Assad regime in Syria reshaped the strategic rivalry between Israel and Iran?
