European Market of Index Investment Funds and Determinants of Its Development

Tomasz Miziołek

Abstract

Index investment funds are funds which passively manage investment portfolio and their goal is replicating a performance of specified financial index. There are more than 800 index funds in Europe nowadays, whose assets amount to over 370 billion euros. Although they still represent a relatively small part of the European investment fund market, their importance on the pan-European scale is growing steadily. The main determinants of this development are competitive investment performance and considerably lower expense ratios compared with actively managed investment funds.
