The Image of the Other in "Aaron", a Montreal Novel by Yves Thériault
Abstract
Since the 19th century, the city of Montreal welcomed many immigrants, including Jews fleeing the rise of European anti-Semitism. Later, Jews arrived from North African countries. Meeting other co-religionists from various traditions, rites and cultures revealed a vast disparity in Jewishness. By analyzing Aaron, novel by Yves Thériault, we will examine this double status of the foreigner: that vis-à-vis Montreal society as well as that which arises within the Jewish community.
