Sylwester Kozak

Sylwester Kozak got his PhD habilitation degree in Finance at the Cracow University of Economics based on the dissertation “Competition in the banking and insurance sectors”, and his PhD in Economics at the Technical University of Radom, the Faculty of Economic Sciences based on the dissertation “Consolidation processes in the US banking system in 1991 – 2000 and its economic effects”. In 1996 he was accepted to a one-year scholarship from Georgetown University where he studied finance and banking at the University of Wisconsin,La Crosse.
He began his banking carrier in 1992, starting as a loan officer in a retail bank, subsequently in 1998 as an analyst in the General Inspectorate of Banking Supervision, and he currently works for the Financial Stability Department of the National Bank of Poland. In 1997 he deepened his banking experience during the international banking internships at US banks: FIRSTAR Bank,Milwaukee,WIin the International Banking Department; and at SCRIPPS Bank,La Jolla,CAin retail banking units.
In 1993 he started his experience with the corporate sector. In 1993-1999 he served as a chairman and a member of the supervisory board of municipal and state-owned corporations. In 2000-2005 he worked for the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Los Angeles as a commercial consul, and in 2002 – 2004 he was the acting head of the Economic and Commercial Division of the Consulate. During his term, with the cooperation of the Polish Investment and Information Agency, he organized trade shows and missions for Polish firms and also he promoted trade and investments in Poland during seminars co-organized with the state chambers of commerce and local branches of World Trade Centers.
In 2008 he joined the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the Warsaw School of Life Sciences in Warsaw where, as an adjunct, teaches finance, banking and financial institutions in Polish and in English. Additionally, at the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the Warsaw University he conducts the master seminar on consolidation and competition in the financial sector.
He is the author of articles in the area of economics and banking, focused on the issues of banking consolidation, foreign investments of international banks and the banking integration within the euro zone, published at domestic and international journals and presented on scientific conferences. He run research projects conducted for the NBP report on the full participation of Poland in the third stage of EMU, and the joint research project of NBP, Catholic University in Lueven, Begium and Institute CEPII in Paris called: Foreign Bank Entry and Credit Allocation in Emerging Markets. He is coauthor of analytic reports prepared by the National Bank of Poland.
