The External Locus of Control as a Mediator of the Relationship Between Neuroticism and Procrastination in Students

Katarzyna Markiewicz

Abstract

Many researchers have got interest in procrastination, i.e. the delay to perform important tasks. They suggest that such behaviours are common among students. It is difficult to state reasons for such a state of affairs. Some authors believe they are caused by the degree of difficulty and/or attractiveness of particular tasks, which may cause stress, others are looking for external reasons pointing to dysregulation of self-regulation mechanisms. Yet, personality traits are quite often considered to play an important role in a tendency to procrastinate. A review of the literature on that subject made plausible the assumption that procrastination may be associated with personality traits and that the feeling of a locus of control may play a role of the mediator. The gathered data reveal the complex nature of that phenomenon.
